Jimmy Smith is currently a Detective at the Bradley County Sheriff's Department. With 18 years experience in Law Enforcement, he has a deep love for police work and a great appreciation for serving this community & the citizens of Bradley County.
A native of Bradley County, Smith is the son of Jim & Barbara Casteel Smith. He married his wife Melody Grisham Smith in 1987 and together they have two children, Lindsey and Tanner Smith.

Honor and respect for his country led Smith, as a young adult, to join the United States Air Force. Four years in the service, he attended college and served six months in the Middle East during the Gulf War.

Returning home, he attended Cleveland State Community College as a full time student pursuing a Law Degree while joining the Cleveland City Police Department as a reserve police officer. His love for police work prompted him to join the Bradley County Sheriff's Department.

He has served in various areas of the Sheriff's Department including Patrol, Burglary Activation Team, SWAT (Special Response Team), Gang Violence Unit, Narcotics, Homicide, Crimes Against Persons, Computer Crimes and several other criminal investigations.

Smith was assigned to the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force where he worked Bradley, Polk, McMinn, and Monroe Counties. During this time Smith worked undercover buying narcotics. He wrote and executed search warrants, made arrests, and worked together with the Sheriff's and Police Chief's of each County.

Smith became Sergeant over the Narcotics Unit in 1999.
During this time his Team:

• Seized over $3,000,000.00 in drug currency.
• Seized several hundred pounds of illegal narcotics.

His passion for police work is obvious. "I saw a positive impact in the lives of others, I saw children in the worst possible conditions being rescued. This moved me to work harder in the battle against narcotics," Smith said.

He began working closely with the United States Federal Prosecutors Office & did what some thought couldn't be done. He began taking local narcotics cases directly to the United States Federal Court and prosecuting the cases himself. If a person received 10 years, they served almost their entire sentence, removing drug dealers from our community.

In 2008 an individual attempted to bride Smith. He did not accept the bribe and arrested the individual. Recently an article written by Sheriff Tim Gobble on the Bradley County Sheriff's Office web site said the following:

"The challenges that face BCSO deputies are varied and can come from many sources. Some challenges test them physically, some test them mentally, and some challenges test them ethically. A routine traffic stop by a BCSO deputy in 2006 resulted in the discovery of $864,928 in cash hidden in the vehicle. The driver claimed neither the car nor the money was his. Although the driver was not arrested or charged with anything, the vehicle turned out to be registered in the name of a suspected drug dealer, so the car and cash were confiscated. After reviewing the seizure, the courts awarded the money to our drug fund for official use in combating illegal drugs and violence in our community.

Sometime later the man who was caught with the money wanted it back. He began offering bribes to several people, including a BCSO detective and others, if he could have the money returned and all records of it destroyed. The bribes he offered totaled over $300,000, and it is to their credit that no one accepted any bribe money. Instead, they reported it. Subsequently, this person was charged in federal court for attempting to bribe law enforcement officers."

"I have committed my life to serving the people of Bradley County and I feel that being called a public servant is an honor. I am a true professional who strives to do right in every situation. I have and always will be focused on protecting the future of Bradley County and the citizens who call this community home." Smith said.
